Newsletters are a tremendous form of communication. They can also act as powerful marketing machines, but how can you quickly and easily go about creating a newsletter?
Unlike a corporate brochure, a newsletter has the big advantage of appearing to be less about sales and more about informing your prospective customer. But creating a newsletter often seams to fill would be newsletter editors with fear.
That’s usually because the job of creating a newsletter is given to someone who has no particular skills related to newsletter production and so at first newsletter creation might, to that person, seem like a very ominous task.

Here are FIVE tips to get yourself creating your organization’s newsletter quickly and easily:
1. Will you be creating an online or offline newsletter?
Work out where you will publish your newsletter. Is this going to be a printed newsletter or will you only send it out as an email or publish it online?
2. What size and shape will your newsletter be?
If you are creating a printed newsletter then you can decide between single or double sided, but as soon as you start adding additional sheets of paper then you need to bear in mind that it will turn into a 4 page newsletter, 8 page or 12 page newsletter. In other words, adding one sheet of folded paper gives you four more pages to fill on each occasion.
If you intend to create an online newsletter then size is less critical because you will not have the complexities of printing, but you should still remain disciplined in deciding the rough number of words and articles and sticking to it.
3. Who will contribute copy to your newsletter?
My strong advice is not to try to write every newsletter article yourself. That will just make your newsletter creation unnecessarily hard work. So ask your organization’s members to contribute. If you are writing for a business then speak to colleagues, if this newsletter is going to be for your club or church then approach other members
4. Make sure you set newsletter creation deadlines:
This is really important. If you are asking others to contribute articles to your newsletter, don’t just get their agreement, but set a firm deadline. Tell them you look forward to reading a draft on Tuesday, rather than just saying to get you their newsletter article when they can.
Along the same lines, make sure you set yourself deadlines too. Map out the date upon which you intend to have each stage of your newsletter creation complete. Work back from the final publication date that you have determined and agree that date with others. That way you will feel locked in to the creation of your newsletter – in a good way.
5. Prioritize your newsletter creation:
We all have a dangerous tendency to put things off and if you start to get busy with other things then you will surely end up putting your newsletter creation to the bottom of the pile. Believe me, your newsletter will never seem like it is that important on a day to day basis and yet over the longer term creating a great newsletter could be one of the most important functions for your organization.
So make sure you stick to the newsletter creation time scale that you have developed above. Do this by putting time aside in your own diary to work on your newsletter creation.
Newsletters are an excellent way to promote your business, club, society, church because they represent a subtle ways of showing off what your organization does. So resist the temptation to make your newsletter too sales orientated and instead focus on making it educational. Above all make sure that you create a newsletter that says read me!
